Health Science 1

College and Career Readiness Plan (CCRP)
Program of Study: First Year of all Health Science Programs.

First Year: Health Science 1: HT3H3AY2  
The following courses are taken in conjunction with Health Science 1:
*Anatomy & Physiology: HT3H0AY1- Year long Course/1.0 credit per year
*Medical Terminology: HT3H2DSH- Dual Credit/Fall semester/.5 credit per semester
*Principles of Health Science: HT3H1DSH - Dual Credit/Spring semester/.5 credit per

Health Science Technology is a two year program with certifications in:
*Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
*Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
*Pharmacy Technician (Pharm)
*Dental Assisting (DNTL)
The first year of the program introduces the basic health science curriculum. Students will be offered a choice of certification strand for the second year of the program.

Students must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum grade of an 85 or higher in Biology, an overall GPA average of 90%, and up-to-date immunizations. Health Science 2 Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

Second Year:Health Science 2:Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) 
Year long course/2.0 credit per semester

Practicum Health Science II: HT4H8AY2 concurrent with HT4H9AY2
This CNA practicum is designed to give students practical application of knowledge and skills acquired during the first year of Health Science Technology. Students will experience hands on nursing care during their clinical rotations at area nursing home facilities. This course prepares students to become eligible to take the Certified Nursing Assistant exam. The cost of this exam is $93.
*Courses offered in conjunction with El Paso Community College:
HPRS 2332 Health Care Communications: Articulated Credit

Students must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum grade of an 85 or higher in Biology, an overall GPA average of 90%, and up‐to‐date immunizations. Students, at their own expense, will be required to wear industry standard scrubs in assigned color, have a CPR certification, a background check, and a drug screening prior to clinical rotations. The overall cost to students is approximately $200. Students are also required to show a Social Security Card and a valid Texas ID in order to participate in CCTE designated clinical rotations.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Second Year: Practicum Health Science 2:
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) HT5H0DY2 (Dual Credit)
concurrent with HT5H1DY2 (Dual Credit)

Year long course/2.0 credit per semester

This EMT course prepares students for a career in out-of-hospital emergency medical care. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the National Registry Examination for Emergency Medical Technicians and continue with the next two levels of training: EMT Intermediate and EMT Paramedic. EPCC offers a Paramedic to RN transition program for students achieving an Associates of Applied Science-Paramedic.
Upon successful completion of this course, students may have the opportunity to test and obtain the National Registry for Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification. The cost for this certification is approximately $70.
*Courses offered in conjunction with El Paso Community College: EMSP 1501 Emergency Medical Technician-Basic: Dual Credit/August-March EMSP 1160 Clinical-Emergency Medical Technician: Dual Credit/March-May
Students must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum grade of an 85 or higher in Biology, an overall GPA average of 90%, and up-to-date immunizations. Students, at their own expense, will be required to have a background check, fingerprinting, and a drug screening prior to clinical rotations. Also required are industry standard uniforms. This course requires students to participate in clinical rotations outside of school hours.

Pharmacy Technician

Second Year: Practicum Health Science I:
Pharmacy Technician (Pharm) HT4H6AY2 & HT4H7AY2

Year long course/2.0 credit per semester

This Pharmacology Technician practicum is designed to give students practical application of knowledge and skills acquired during the first year of Health Science Technology. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience in the pharmacy field. Students who complete the program are eligible to take both the IV Certification Exam and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam.

Pharmacy Technician
(Pharm Tech)

Program of Study: (CCTE) Pharmacy Technician

Second Year: Practicum Health Science I: Dental Assistant HT5H20Y2 concurrent with HT5H30Y2
Year long course/2.0 credit per semester

The Dental Assistant pracitcum is designed to give students practical application of knowledge and skills acquired during the first year of Health Science Technology. Students will learn a variety of patient care, office, and laboratory duties. They will learn sterilization practices, dental instruments and materials required to treat patients. Students will also learn how to obtain and update patients’ dental records, prepare materials for impressions and restorations, and process dental x rays. They will also learn to remove sutures, apply topical anesthetics to gums or cavity preventive agents to teeth. Lab duties may include making casts of the teeth and mouth from impressions, clean and polish removable appliances and make temporary crowns. Practicum experiences can occur in a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience in the dentistry field.
