This program provides training in the Veterinary Assistant field. The students will experience hands on work with various small, companion animals. The first year of the program includes animal handling and restraint, health and safety, sanitation, first aid, surgical preparation, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, infectious diseases, instrument and equipment identifications, laws and ethics, and veterinary office procedures.
Second Year: Veterinary Assistant 2: Advanced Animal Science: HT3A10Y1 concurrent with Practicum in AG FD NR 2: HT5A00Y3
Veterinary Assistant 2 focuses on large animal husbandry, genetics and breeding, as well as the practicum serving as an internship in a clinical setting. A total of 500 hours is required of both the classroom and the clinical practice to apply for certification as a Veterinary Assistant. Upon successful completion of this course and the required 500 hours, students may have the opportunity to test and obtain a Texas Veterinary Medical Association Certification. The cost of this exam is approximately $125.
Students must be at least 16 years old, have a minimum grade of an 85 or higher in Biology, an overall GPA average of 90%, and up‐to‐date immunizaions. Students, at their own expense, will be required to have a background check,fingerprinting, and a drug screening prior to clinical rotations.
